Math

Here is some information about what our focus in math on will be this year. There are four areas of focus for the school year.
  1. Place Value - Students extend their understanding of place value (base-ten system). This includes ideas of counting in fives, tens, and hundreds, and comparing numbers. Recognize that three digits of a three digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones (853 = 8 hundreds + 5 tens + 3 ones).
  2. Place Value - Students use their understanding of addition to develop accuracy when adding and subtracting to 100. They solve problems to 1,000 by selecting and accurately applying different strategies mentally.
            1.  9 + 6 = 10 + 5
            2. 1 + 8 = 70 + 9
  3. Measurement - Students understand why we need units of measure ( centimeters, meters, inches feet, and yards) and use appropriate tools to determine length.
  4. Geometry - Describe and analyze shapes by examining sides and angles. Develop a foundation for understanding area, volume, congruence, similarity, and symmetry in later grades.
